Master Jack Pot Restaurant at Campbell Street, George Town, Penang

Master Jack Pot 大街小巷 has finally opened its door in George Town, Penang. Located along the busy Campbell Street just opposite the century-old Kwong Tuck Sundries & Liquors, and Hema Hema Ice Cream store, the restaurant offers a selection of Chinese chu-char dishes and hot pot.

We have frequented Master Jack Pot twice. It is a very casual lunch and dinner place with daily business hours running from 11am till 2.30pm & 5pm till 10pm.

The restaurant is marking the opening with their signature hot pot, offering several options. There is the Overlord Double Hot Pot, and also the Double Hot Pot Chicken & Bullfrog featuring chicken, and also a choice of either bullfrog or pork ribs.  If we came with more eating buddies, we would have ordered this hot pot.

The menu also rolls out the the signature Stew Mix Seafood & Roasted Chicken with Hong Kong Curry Style 龙王煲. Ingredients for this popular dish include Hong Kong – style roasted chicken, shrimp, grouper fish head, clams, squid, eggplant, and cabbage.

This is a welcome change up from the normal curry. The chef puts his personal style in and makes it a little different, without the usage of coconut milk. The taste is done right, with slight spiciness and not spoiling the essence of the curry dish. Portion is rather big and best if shared between three or four buddies.

Besides hot pot, the chef also brings passion to the kitchen with his flaming wok. For meat dishes, we shared the Deep-Fried Pork Chop with Southern Cuisine Gravy 洋葱焗猪扒, and the Steamed Minced Pork Garlic & Loofah with Glass Noodle. The deep-fried pork chop is probably one of the better ones in town, being tender and served with a delicious sweet sour sauce. .

The Steamed Minced Pork Garlic & Loofah with Glass Noodle comes with rings of loofah which has a unique taste and texture. The dish is pretty standard but the soy sauce is of pretty good quality.

Our favorite seafood to order here is the Steamed Clam in Sour & Spicy Thai-style 酸辣蒸蛤蜊. The clams are done in the simplicity of sourness and spiciness and we really enjoyed it especially so with the sauce on white rice.

From the drinks menu, there is a list of can drinks and mineral water, and they also have beer and stout.

With Chinese New Year just round the corner, they even have a festive menu. We are planning to try that menu at one day.
