Bottega Penang on Muntri Street, George Town Unveiled New Menu
Bottega Penang on Muntri Street in Georgetown, Penang is back with a new menu with descriptions that are extremely mouth-watering. On your next food outing to this Italian delishop, cafe, pizzeria and grocer, be prepared to indulge in a dozens of newly crafted dishes along with spicy & non-spicy vegetarian versions.
The many comfort Italian food is curated on recipes from the regions in Italy by newly appointed group Executive Chef Giuseppe Zanotti. We revisited in the downstairs dining area and our seat was at the counter with all the action and aromas.
The wine list has a range of red, white and rose. For Happy Hour from 4pm to 8pm, there is an offering of three spritzers/wine (glass) at only RM60. The refreshing Prosecco Rose was a perfect companion for our meal – from the salad through to the starters, hearty pastas, pizzas, mains, and desserts.
We started off with the Capretta salad, incorporating hydroponic leaves with goat cheese, candied walnuts, and orange. Complemented by drizzles of cherry tomato dressing, the salad was a crisp and light teaser.

We had two starters, the Soar has pan-fried Italian sardines served with greens, along with onions, raisins, toasted cashew nuts, and white wine & apple vinegar. Next was Tonne, a very good dish with thinly sliced poached veal, caper berries, and hydroponic leaves heightened with thick creamy tuna caper sauce.

The risotto and pasta dishes are hearty and the serving portion may be shared. For risotto, Chef Giuseppe came up with a special course, “Nerone”. The chef had the carnaroli rice cooked with sous vide squid in squid ink and parsley emulsion.
The other pasta dish of La Genovese was a mix of candele pasta with stew beef silverside, tomato sauce, red onions, carrots, celery and pecorino romano cheese. Chef Giuseppe uses the artisanal Pasta Cavaliere Giuseppe Cocco (shape of a long candle) for this dish. I helped myself to a forkful – the al-dente pasta and the rich slow-cooked beef bound together well with the saltiness of the grated pecorino romano cheese made with sheep’s milk.

Mains offerings are mainly beef and pork. If the meats are not your cup of tea, the only one you could have would be the Mammolese; cod fish stewed with green olives, red onion, baby potato, sage, capers & evoo in spicy tomato sauce. Priced at RM95, it is not the most affordable but definitely worth it for those who love their fish prepared with a smooth moist bite and well-flavored with hint of spiciness.

Bottega also offers its own house-baked pizzas. For those who are hungry for seafood, do check out the Frutti del Mare. This pizza ticks all the boxes with its combination of mussels, prawns, and squid, besides tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella cheese on a crust nicely done with little charred bubbles.
As for vegetarian options, Bottega dishes out choices like Margherita and Vegetarienne.

Desserts are the perfect way to end the evening. We veered away from the signature Tiramisu and savored the Sud Tirol and the Caprese while sipping on coffee.
The Sud Tirol added a Christmas-ty feel with its ingredients of warm spiced golden apples, dry raisins, rum, cinnamon, apple sauce and custard cream. As for the Caprese, we cannot get enough of the dark chocolate torte with almond served with forest berries sauce, dark rum, and a scoop of vanilla gelato.

Bottega’s electronic menu board and glass counter are beamed with deli meats, wine, olive oil, pasta, snacks, and excellent cheeses. The relaxed pet-friendly spot is open daily and business hours are from 11am till 11pm.
