La Vie Restaurant at Le Dream Boutique Hotel, Rope Walk, Penang
La Vie Restaurant located on the ground floor of Le Dream Boutique Hotel in the Rope Walk (Jalan Pintai Tali) neighborhood is making a name in Penang gastronomic scene with its European cuisine done with Asian influences.
It was a lovely visit to celebrate the birthday of our friend, at this intimate relax place which was recently acknowledged a Michelin selected dining spot in The Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2023.
The restaurant has a sitting capacity of 40 pax and guests will receive a warm welcome from the friendly Kelvin Lim.
We enjoyed good company while discovering more great wines paired with a line-up of appetizers, mains, and sides. For appetizers, it include choices like Chargrill Squid, Corn, Kataifi Prawn, Hokkaido Scallop, and Crispy Unagi. La Vie’s take on the the unagi bowled us over. The lightly seasoned fish with crunchy breaded crisp skin on the outside and soft texture within is one addictive appetizer.

The Hokkaido Scallop has a disc of seared scallop served alongside pomelo and cucumber, on coconut water enhanced with citrus fragrance of kaffir lime. The numerous elements nicely complement one another.

With appetites whetted, we moved on to the mains. There is a selection of meat and one definitely worth mentioning is the Hida Beef. La Vie is one restaurant in Penang that serves this premium prized meat known for its quality snow-like mesh of marbling, and flavor. It has been said the wonderful flavor of the Hida beef is due to the beef cattle being raised on the clean air and pristine water of Gifu prefecture (under Japan’s Northern Alps). The beautifully marbled meat cooked on charcoal grill is extremely tender, with melt-in-the-mouth texture, and distinctive juiciness.
Also not to be missed is their signature Rack of Lamb. We loved what they do with the both the lamb and the beef, and also loving the condiments (maldon sea salt, wasabi, garlic, red wine jus) that arrived together.

Apart from the many dishes that were served, Kelvin presented a complimentary serving of ‘Lam Mee’ (birthday noodles) to celebrate the birthday of our friend. The bowl of noodles with large prawns and abalone wowed us with savory rich broth, and of course, the accompanying homemade sambal added a nice spicy kick. Upon our first slurp, we did not stop and finished it all.
