Penang Tropical Fruit Farm, Teluk Bahang, Penang
A fun weekend getaway in the Penang Tropical Fruit Farm located in Teluk Bahang provides new discoveries and plenty of photo opportunities. The orchard known throughout Malaysia for its large variety of fruits (around 200 species) is within reach of the island residents and visitors – around 40 minutes drive away from Tanjung Tokong.
The orchard is home to a wonderful plethora of fruit plants – giant passionfruit, star apple, yellow sapote, acerola, velvet apple, fig, santa claus melon, araca boi, bengal currant, longan, to huge toman bananas. We had a chance to go on a guided farm tour & fruit tasting together with owner Mr. Quah Ewe Kheng.
For one who is passionate about passion fruit, tasting one full ripened fruit plucked from the plant is indeed lucky. The seedy fruit grows on vines is so much sweeter compared to those bought from the stores. We bought some home as the crunchy seeds are delicious with ice cream, cake, and mixed in smoothie or yogurt.
A stop-over at the leng kok pond is definitely an eye-opening experience. We joined in the fun with Mr. Quah and searched for the leng kok plant in the muddy waters. Known as a water caltrop (a nutty delicacy commonly used during the mooncake festival prayer offerings), the nut that we pulled out from the plant is fresh green in color as compared to the black ones that are sold in the store. On top of that, they taste a little like chestnut!.
At the end of the tour, we headed back to the station, shopping for all sorts of fruits before adjoining to the farm’s cafe for a meal. There are plenty of selections to choose from, and it is a delight to get fruits that are not commonly found in markets or supermarkets.
The meal was a spread of Kelantanese specialties and fruits. Nasi Berlauk is a plate of rice with fish and chicken in an aromatic bowl of curry. Another dish was the Kelantan Laksa – homemade rice noodles with santan laksa broth and special sambal tumis. The beverage menu is a comprehensive read of fruit juices, smoothies, and coffee.
