Metisser Patisserie & Tea Room, Penang
BY CK Lam
The opening of Metisser Patisserie & Tea Room with its patisserie and gourmet offerings, and specialty teas is upping up the Rope Walk area in George Town, Penang. The patisserie was unveiled in end of March 2016 and the current dessert list offers everything you come to expect from French sweet treats.
As soon as we walked in the patisserie, the basically white interior color creates a soft inviting look. The patisserie is separated into two sections: the entrance with the open concept kitchen and another section for the seating area. The high ceiling with natural light shining through its glass covered ceiling greatly brightens the surroundings.
You can enjoy the desserts, served fresh from the open kitchen, with a selection of teas from Harney & Sons – ranging from the oolong, green, chopra, tisanes, fruit, to the white, the comfortable black and the red rooibos.
We couldn’t resist tucking into the wholesome goodness of the freshly baked scones. It is simple and beautifully formed, with strong flavors of butter capped with a golden brown finishing. The freshly baked scone set (two scones) with mixed berries jam and clotted cream is priced at RM10. Made with the fine variety of Flechard French butter, the scones have since garnered a following.
The scones are best enjoyed with a cup of tea. We had a pot of Japanese Sencha (RM12), a pleasant and approachable green tea with slight roast flavors. It is an interesting choice for those interested in trying green tea.
From the vast selection of the tisanes family, we also enjoyed a pot of chamomile.
We moved on the tarte au citron (RM14), a tart that impresses the eye and taste buds with its handcrafted white chocolate daisy. The chef cleverly presents the versatility of the lemon and apricot fruit in the dessert which has an aromatic sablee tart shell holding a smooth lemon buttercream with acidity and sweetness. The end result is a light yet satisfying taste.
We sampled two other desserts – opera cake and the caramel au beurre sale.
Made up of layers of callebaut chocolate ganache, coffee buttercream, coffee essence and almond sponge, the opera cake is finished off with a dark chocolate glaze. Decorated with a sprinkle of gold leaf, the cake with robust ingredients proves to be an indulgent concoction especially for coffee and chocolate lovers.
On the other hand, the caramel au beurre sale is much lighter. It has hint of sourness with green apple coulis sandwiched between the lime joconde, vanilla sponge and caramel mousse. Finished with the amber-colored salted caramel glaze, it is topped with crunchy pistachio nuts, cookie crumble and a white chocolate feather.
The concept of this patisserie aims to serve up delightful desserts, and the experience is wholesome. Do well swing by the washroom as you are also treated to Crabtree & Evelyn personal care collection that includes a hand wash, hand cream and eau de cologne.
We have only tasted four items on this visit, thus we look forward to returning for more as the kitchen has announced several new items on the menu – saint honore, macaron au lavande and the trinite du chocolat.
