Wantan Mee House Pulau Tikus Penang

BY CK Lam

Doing my marketing in the Pulau Tikus wet market gives me the opportunity to try the many hawker food from the surrounding food stalls. One of the popular noodle stall is the wantan mee stall at Swee Kong coffee shop, located on Burma Road (opposite the Pulau Tikus Police Station).

The neighbourhood wantan mee stall has been serving dry version wantan mee in soy sauce, pork lard and signature “lor” starchy gravy for the breakfast and lunch crowd.

Being in good business for the past 10 years, the owner has moved his business to a much larger shop just next door with a new name. The shop with the signboard “Wantan Mee House Pulau Tikus” continues to draw in the crowd.

On a recent lunch visit, we enjoyed the noodles with homemade barley drinks.

The dry version wantan mee comes with slices of char siew (barbecued pork), Chinese black mushrooms, deep-fried or boiled wantan (dumpling), choy sum and flavors from pork lard and lor gravy. It is priced at RM4 per plate.

The accompanying condiment of preserved green chili works great with the wantan mee.

The deep-fried wantan made with minced pork is perfect as a side dish too. With its crunchy texture, one can easily devor a plate of these dumplings. Besides the wantan, there is the crescent shaped sui kow.

The lor gravy is not commonly seen in wantan mee stalls around town. It adds smoothness and flavor to the noodles.

Apart from the thin and thick noodles, this place also offers dried hor fun (flat rice noodle). I enjoy the hor fun more as its texture combined better with the lor gravy.

The downstairs sitting area has around 10 tables to accommodate the crowd. The place is cooling as the owner has stationed the fiery stove to the back portion of the shop.
