Big M Dumpling 大麦生煎 located in Chariton Hotel Alma along the busy Jalan Seri Impian in Bukit Mertajam, Penang is your new go-to neighborhood Chinese dumpling spot. Opened in the middle of 2023, many foodies have been tipped off that the dumplings here are passionately made on the spot.
The family run dumpling restaurant with a small size kitchen has its menu offerings limited to mainly dishes of savory and fried dumplings and wontons as well as noodles.
Each day, the family members can be seen kneading dough and wrapping the dumplings. A seat nearby the working counter is the place to get a glimpse of their busy hands in action.

Our group of four arrived for an early lunch and we started off with The Tasting Promo Set. If you are looking to get this set, do go early as there is only a limited number of sets per day.
The set comprising of four pork bao, and four chives & pork dumplings is perfect for those who want to try a bit of everything. The Pan-fried Pork Bao with a slightly crispy based has well flavored and juicy filling, and goes well with a dip of black vinegar.

The crescent-shaped Pan-fried Chives & Pork Dumpling 生煎饺子 comes with a substantial amount of chive and pork filling, with the chives giving a strong fragrant aroma. Pan-fried with a beautiful golden-brown glaze on one side, the dumplings eaten with the homemade oomph-fill chili sauce are very delicious.
We shared another plate of the dumplings along with an order of Red Oil Wonton 红油云吞 RM7, which has boiled wonton served with spicy chili pepper oil.

After the dumplings, we steer ourselves to the BBQ Pork Wonton Noodles 古早味叉烧云吞面 with noodles served with crispy fried wonton, pork lard, and juicy char siew (barbecued pork) with a nice balance of meat and fat.

With operating hours running from early 9.30am till 3pm, the outlet is one nice spot for breakfast and lunch. Decor can be simple but it serves well-made food. Closing day is Monday.
