Dale Restaurant at Tanjung Bungah, Penang
Dale Restaurant 大乐餐厅 bringing a taste of street food in China was a refreshing find for us. Located in Tanjung Bungah, Penang (opposite Dalat International School), diners can experience the taste of Hang Zhou, Chong Qing, Liu Zhou, and Yang Zhou from its menu of noodles, bun, snacks, skewers, and rice dishes.
The restaurant provides a choice of dining settings – interior air-conditioned space, and outdoor patio seating area. The decor is simple, and there’s a self-service corner where diners can help themselves to the dining utensils as well as crockeries, and also complimentary Chinese tea.

We find a table, seat ourselves, and choose our food from the given menu flyer. The owner has kept things straightforward with a one-page menu for quick and easy ordering.
The bun and rice section has the most choices, with over 15. We had the Hang Zhou Xiao Long Bao, Fried Dumpling, and Steamed Dumpling. Our favorite of the lot is the Hang Zhou Xiao Long Bao 杭州小笼包, fluffy with a filling of meat and greens that is seasoned well. As for the crescent-shaped dumplings, they are steamed or pan-fried, and has a thick wrapper with a filling of minced meat and corn. Dipping sauces such as soy sauce, vinegar, and chili oil are provided to enhance the flavors.
Hang Zhou Xiao Long Bao 杭州小笼包 4pcs RM4.50
Fried Dumpling 煎饺 5pcs – RM6.50
Steamed Dumpling 蒸饺 4pcs – RM4.50
As we were rather hungry, we ordered two rice dishes. The Hainan Chicken Rice 海南鸡饭 arrived at our table at their absolute succulence. The toppings of grounded ginger scallion sauce added fresh and zesty flavor. Alternatively, the Yang Zhou Fried Rice 扬州炒饭 makes for a simple tasty vibrant colored rice dish done with high smoke ‘wok hei’.
Hainan Chicken Rice 海南鸡饭 RM8
Yang Zhou Fried Rice 扬州炒饭 RM7.50
There are multiple noodle options, with choices like Peking Zha Jiang Noodle, Liu Zhou Snail Rice Noodle, and Chong Qing Noodle. The latter has a soup made from a combination of chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, and aromatic spices. The flavors are well composed, but the spiciness and numbing sensation are much lighter.
For snacks, the menu has grilled Garlic Egg Plant, Lady Finger, and Long Bean, besides skewers of beef, pork belly, chicken wing, and lamb grilled with smoky aroma.
Chong Qing Noodle 重庆小面 RM7.50
Garlic Eggplant 蒜香茄子 RM8
Skewers of meat seasoned with spices and chili flakes
