Quallys Nusantara Kitchen offers customers a range of masakan kampung Malay cuisine for lunch and dinner at its outlet on Burmah Road, Penang. Sitting in the front porch of Ghee Hiang Boutique, the outlet has a friendly vibe, thanks to the owner Kak Ayu who’s up for a chat with her customers.
Its pork-free menu features a variety of meat and poultry dishes prepared with her family-handed down recipes. Laced with aromatic spices, heat, and flavor, the dishes are enough to please the palate.
On the long table, dishes like charcoal grilled chicken, ayam berempah, cincaru sumbat, ayam percik, satay to beef rendang, and much more are laid out in pots. There is a variety of vegetable choices which include kacang botol, stir-fried long beans and sayur kankung.
On another side of the outlet, chicken and cuts of marinated meat are grilled. The grilled chicken presented in a whole drumstick served with a creamy sauce is worth the wait if you are not in a hurry. Other chicken choices include ayam berempah and ayam kicap (fried and done with dark soy sauce).
Kak Ayu also skilled in making beef rendang. This slow-cooked dry curry dish has beef prepared with aromatic spice blends and coconut milk. Each chunk of meat is tender and succulent.
Besides meat and poultry, Quallys does offer fish options. One of their specialties is cincaru sumbat, a satisfying fried fish dish with a special stuffing that Kak Ayu has created using chili paste and onions. The fragrant stuffing teased with its slight heat is exceedingly different from most outlets.
Diners may choose to have the dishes paired with turmeric rice accompanied with pickled cucumber, kuah banjir and sambal belacan. A spoonful of the much-beloved sambal belacan is all it takes to make it a wholesome meal.
For those who wish to forgo turmeric rice may opt to have white rice.
