Penang Hawker Food at Jin Cafe, Siam Road, Penang
Jin Cafe at Siam Road, Penang –
This coffee shop located at the corner of Siam Road and Anson Road in George Town is famous, or in this case, used to be famous with the crowd patronizing the Siam Road Char Koay Teow stall. The days of crowd converging in the vicinity of this coffee shop are over, as this place has undergone a revamp and it is now known as Jin Cafe.
One can check out the varied hawker food consisting mainly of noodle dishes and rice dishes over at Jin Cafe. The menu is kept relatively small and unassuming, with about 5 variations to choose from.
There is a stall selling pork soup cooked with salted vegetables (kiam chye) or bitter gourd (kor gua). It is prepared with a variety of cuts, including intestines, liver, minced pork, and meatball. The portion is reasonable and comes with an option of white rice or yam rice. A dip of the chili and thick black sauce completes the tasty meaty ingredients of the soup.
Next up, there is a new Char Koay Teow store in the coffee shop. Each plateful of noodles is stir-fried with black sauce, small cockles, prawns, bean sprouts, lap cheong (red Chinese sausage), and egg. The garnishing of chives (koo chye) perks up the dish.
The Char Koay Teow is available from 11am until 6pm, making it the perfect choice for an early lunch and also teatime.
Ah Seng Fukui Mee (Lam Mee) stall shares the same premises and the noodle dish with light pork broth has since garnered a following. The plate of yellow noodles has omelette stripes, prawns, lean meat, deep-fried scallions and coriander contributing flavors and pops of color. Spicy sambal belacan is provided to zing up the dish.
Other food choices here include Wan Than Mee, Egg & Toast Bread and Dim Sum. As for Dim Sum, the menu has a little of something for everyone – bao, siew mai, and loh mai kai (steamed savory glutinous rice).
Jin Cafe opens early in the morning at 7am until 6pm, and it is closed on Sundays.
