Chinese New Year 2020 Reunion Banquet Set Dinner @G Hotel Gurney, Penang
A round table dinner always symbolically unites the family over a meal in Chinese culture, and more so during Chinese New Year. The same sense of savoring these precious moments with family and loved ones can be carried out on Chinese New Year with an 8-course Reunion Set Dinner at G Hotel Gurney, Penang.
The award-winning hotel offers the comfortable dining environment of G’s Grand Ballroom for diners to gather together for the Reunion Chinese New Year celebrations in ushering in the year of the Rat.
The Chinese New Year banquet packages prepared by Banquet Chef Ooi Kok Kang are available from 15th January till 29th February 2020. Diners can choose from three sumptuous menus – the Happiness Package, Prosperity Package, or the Longevity Package.
Package starts from RM1,688nett per table (10 pax) and diners get to enjoy an unlimited flow of Chinese tea, lucky draw sessions and live band performances only on the 24th January 2020. Corkage charges are specially waived on that day too! On the remaining days of this promotion, the dinner will be held at the hotel private function rooms – however, it will be without the CNY eve extra perks such as the live entertainment.
A group of us attended the banquet food-tasting session and savored the offerings of the Prosperity Package. Priced at RM1,888 per table, the menu features exquisite dishes such as the Lucky Fresh Salmon Yee Sang, Braised Duck with Dried Oyster and Sea Moss, Steamed Pearl Garoupa in Hong Kong Style, and many more.
The first dish taking center stage was the traditional and auspicious Lucky Fresh Salmon Yee Sang. Perfectly composed to plate up this colorful delicacy are many different types of condiments, sauces, and fresh raw salmon. Toss away and may the new year bring much prosperity and good health to all!
Next came the Double Boiled Dried Scallop Mini Abalone & Fish Maw in Vegetable Soup. The warming light soup had a nice body of flavor, enhanced by the many different ingredients. The addition of the leafy vegetable added a crunchy bite.
Then we were treated to the Braised Duck with Dried Oyster and Sea Moss. The duck was pull-apart tender and tasty right to the bone while the deep flavor sauce with a hint of dried oyster was a real compliment to the dish. Many had two words to say: “very tasty!”
Stuffed Sea Cucumber and Portobello with Broccoli was up next. The chef put the dish on the menu with a combination of different ingredients, with some elevated. The portobello mushroom took the place of the more frequently used Chinese black mushroom, which in turn reflects the chef’s meticulousness.
Scallop always symbolizes new opportunities or the opening of new horizons in Chinese beliefs, and Chef Ooi presented them in the Sauteed Fresh Scallop and Macadamia Nuts in X.O. Sauce. It was a wholesome and flavorful mix of textures and flavors – crunchy macadamia nuts, refreshing sliced peppers and decadence of large-sized fresh scallops.
We were won over by the Steamed Pearl Garoupa in Hong Kong Style. The cooking time of the highly prized fish was timed just right. Simplicity is the key and the chef lets the dish shine through with its freshness and natural flavors.
Just before the dessert was Braised Ee Fu Noodles with Fresh Water Prawns. The dish made a great addition to the Chinese New Year celebration with prawns bringing happiness while noodles symbolizing longevity.
To end the meal was a sweet dessert of Double Boiled Fragrant Pear with Snow Fungus. This warm dessert was accompanied by two slices of Chinese Pancake, making it a not overly sweet and simple treat to wrap up this delicious and fulfilling feast!
At G Hotel Gurney, guests can take the time to indulge in the festive meal as there are no turnaround sessions, unlike certain establishments that practice two-hour slots for dinner time.
