Suffolk House Restaurant, Penang
The next time you are looking to indulge in fine dining around Penang, take time to enjoy the Suffolk House Restaurant experience. Under the management of YKH Group of Restaurants, the dining place offers the serenity of the 200-year old Suffolk House while you satisfy your palate.
The fine dining restaurant has recently been smartened up with a new look. The white table cloths and the black and white marble flooring combined with the contrast of the heritage building’s high ceilings and chandeliers added to the charm.
Just in case you didn’t already know, the pork free restaurant is headed by Executive Chef Mathijs Nanne. The Dutch chef give diners a unique Western dining experience, combining French cooking techniques with vibrant flavors of locally sourced Penang produce, including the popular nutmeg.
Several menus were crafted and guests get to experience a selection of playful and imaginative dishes freshly prepared without the use of additives and preservatives.
I had the pleasure of savoring some old favorites and new delights by the chef on my dinner visit. To start off the meal, his famous sorbet of Sambal Belacan made with lime gel, fragrant leaves and cashew crumble was unforgettable. The creative concoction delighted and surprised the palate with harmony of sourness, sweetness, spiciness and saltiness.
There were two appetizers – first was the light and fresh Shrimp and Fish ‘Cocktail’ priced at RM38. The cocktail was paired with momotaro and coriander emulsion, melange of marinated heirloom tomatoes, fragrant leaves, tempeh crumble, black rice crisp and laksa kefir dressing.

The other was the Chicken and Almond Terrine. Thickly sliced, the terrine made a great appetizer served with crunchy locally sourced fragrant greens, pickles, nutmeg fruit relish and laksa kefir dressing. “The nutmeg is a versatile fruit grown in our very own backyard,” said Nanne.

As for the Roasted Tomato Soup, it was brightened up with refreshing taste from fresh tomatoes, thyme and basil oil. Balanced with sourdough granola, it was a warm and comforting treat.
Main dishes were soon served upon the table, with the Oven Roasted Salmon and the Local Herb Crusted Lamb Rack.
The Oven Roasted Salmon was beautifully presented. Set upon warm crushed baby potato and coconut salad, the dish has its flavor rounded with roasted cauliflower, lemon and capers besides dots of yellow curry emulsion.

Then came the melt-in-the-mouth texture Local Herb Crusted Lamb Rack with slow roasted truss tomato. For further depth of flavor, Chef Nanne delivered the dish with interesting flavor combinations. Coming into play are sauces such as curried roselle jus, ‘roulade’ of marinated zucchini and lamb jam, and creamy taro root mousseline.

For a sweet finale, there were two desserts. The first was the Toasted Carrot Cake with raisin puree, pineapple and kafir lime relish, and burst of coldness from the rum and raisin ice cream.
The other dessert was the Flourless Bitter Sweet Chocolate Gateaux. The chef had the smooth chocolaty gateaux paired with textures of nutmeg, papaya and nutmeg sorbet.
While both proved to be inviting, it was the Flourless Bitter Sweet Chocolate Gateaux that I reached out for seconds. It was beautifully created, melting in the mouth leaving a chocolatey sweet memory.
