Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight 香云素食坊, Tanjung Tokong, Penang
BY CK Lam
Visiting Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight 香云素食坊 for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by its approach of using vegetarian ingredients and making them into palate pleasing meal. Located on the first floor of Vantage in Tanjong Tokong, Penang, this is the third Xiang Yun outlet to open in Penang, after two other locations at Kompleks Lebuh Nipah and I-Avenue.
This neighborhood restaurant owned by E.K. Khor offers a dining experience with gluten-free vegetarian that can be enjoyed by everyone.
“With the tagline “Cook with Heart, Serve with Love”, the menu brings along an interpretation of Asian-inspired vegetarian cuisine with a dose of Western dishes,” shared Khor.
The Teochew steam is inspired by a recipe with fish made of seaweed and soybean, prepared with black fungus, tomatoes, mushrooms and bean curd. The addition of ginger and Chinese parsley give the dish that perfect taste of the popular Teochew fish dish.
Served with a bowl of rice, the fish dish makes a perfect meal for both the young and elderly, without the worries of fish bones.
Vietnamese noodle is a comforting mixed bowl of something sour and appetizing to warm up the tummy. The bowl of vegetable broth with freshness of herbs, tanginess from lime and spiciness from chilles is spruced up with texture such as beancurd, mushrooms, beancurd sheet, black fungus, tomatoes, vegetables, and noodles.
The combination of natural flavors tantalizes the tastebuds and had us slurping to the last drop.
Besides other popular items such as nasi lemak, bak kut teh, Indian claypot fish curry with assorted vegetables, and Hainan chicken rice, there are also side dishes such as soy satay, spring roll, pasembur, and five herbs vege roll (lor bak).
There is a Western option on the menu too. Be surprised by fish & chips, chicken chop, salsa cutlet, cream chicken, French romance and choices of spaghetti – all with a vegetarian twist.
The salsa cutlet is made with soy-based seaweed cutlet that represents fish. It comes served with cabbage coleslaw and generous amount of deep-fried potato chips. The robust flavors of tomato salsa makes every mouthful more flavorsome.
The outlet offers beverages such as soursop, passionfruit and a range of tea. Coffee cravings can also be met with latte prepared using premium Arabica coffee beans. Currently, the Coffee Hour Promotion of Buy 1 Free 1 is happening between 3pm and 5pm.
Besides that, the outlet also offers a few desserts: jelly ai yu, affogato and ice cream. We finished the meal with the jelly ai yu, which is a sourish jelly dessert.

The air-conditioned vegetarian restaurant with its lunches and dinners galore is an ideal place to dine not only for vegetarians but also for those who occasionally prefer a meatless meal.
