BY CK Lam
G Hotel Gurney, Penang located between renowned shopping malls, Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon, and nearby Gurney Drive hawker center recently completed a RM35 million makeover. The hotel is very much a full on luxury experience, unveiling modern and fresh new look with chic lobby, dining places and contemporary rooms.
Recently, the hotel put on The Perfect Bed & Perfect Pint Challenge in the sea view G Suite (also known as Honeymoon Suite) for six selected bloggers. It was much fun participating in the interesting event besides understanding the hospitality and the 5-star service that the hotel has to offer.
The suite is encapsulated in an ultra chic and contemporary design with a posh and spacious living room featuring plush leather sofa and a dining table.
The G Suite maintained a level of warmth and cosiness with a 65” smart HD LED TV, Appelles eco-friendly toiletries, lavish dressing room and comfortable bed (with Royal Platinum Serta mattress) dressed up tastefully to retire to.
According to Director of Communications, Christina Tan, wedding couples who signed up for the Stylish wedding package (RM1,488nett per table of minimum 30 tables) and Passion wedding package (RM1,888nett per table of minimum 30 tables) will get to enjoy the wedding night in the G Suite after the wedding banquet.
Bathroom polished with fine touch of elegance and modernity
The event started off with an introduction and a bed making demo by Housekeeping Manager, Mr Shahril Seman. According to Seman, a housekeeper can spruced up a bed in a matter of minutes as they have to keep up with the many rooms.
The fun begins with every blogger folding in the bedsheet, getting the envelope fold at the four corners, putting on the duvet cover, positioning of pillows correctly and tidiness within the challenging time of 10 minutes. Seman said another five minutes is extended if the task is not completed on time.
For me, I took the whole 15 minutes in making the bed.

Next is putting up the duvet cover and duvet insert. Things weren’t as easy as it looks – its a bit like a workout at the gym. This process actually takes the most time.

All smiles after the Perfect Bed Challenge
After the rounds of bed making, the afternoon went on with the Perfect Pint Challenge held at the spacious alfresco Tree Bar.
The Tree Bar specializing in craft beer and whiskey is a fine place to drink and people watching. Sitting under an 80-year-old ‘Albizia Saman’ rain tree, the bar with 198 seating capacity offers a selection of beverages and bites. The Happy Hour is from 12pm to 4pm, where guests are offer the buy 1 free 1 promotion on all house pours.
Open seven days a week, the bar begins service from 12pm to 1am on Sunday to Thursday while the operating hours for Friday and Saturday is from 12pm to 2am, serving the lowest price of beer in town with 3 pints of beer from RM58nett onwards.
We met Mr Danson Khaw, the Assistant Outlet Manager, who demonstrated the way to get a perfect pint of Asahi with accuracy level of beer and foam within a limited time.
It was my first and fun experience pouring the beer and it looks like my pouring skill doesn’t come close to the one poured by Danson. It just shows that I did not focus enough on the pouring demo session.
After the two stages of competition, the afternoon ended with much savory bites paired with Asahi and Cider Bite, and prizes given to the winners. Three winners were awarded with luxurious G Hotel Kelawai room stay at the Executive Room (worth RM1040), Executive Premier (worth RM1190) and the Premier Suite (worth RM2340), along with Executive Lounge benefits.

Thank you G Hotel Gurney for hosting us and showing us the happening behind the scenes. At least, I also realized I can pull off the making up of a 5-star hotel bed, but has much to know about making a perfect pint.
