Olive Tree Hotel in Bayan Lepas, Penang, welcomes the Year of The Rooster with its special Lunar New Year 2017 menus, banquet options and buffets.
The Blessing 7-course Set Menu at RM738nett per table and the Auspicious 8-course Set Menu at RM888nett per table (with a minimum order of two tables) is available from 9th January to 12th February 2017.
On the Chinese New Year Eve (27th January 2017), enjoy the 8-Course Dinner priced at RM1,288+ per table (includes two bottles of red wine) in the Grand Ballroom with special performances. On other days, course meals will be served in smaller function rooms.
The menus with a taste of Chinese New Year have dishes served with auspicious meanings and symbolism. We sampled the Auspicious 8-course Set Menu (RM888nett) which includes two bottles of red wines and free-flow of Chinese tea.
The meal starts with the refreshing Olive Tree Yee Sang Platter 锦绣呈祥齐捞生. The bright citrus notes of the sauce and condiments, and servings of crackers, pomelo, pickled ingredients, chopped nuts and salmon offer a wonderful combination of texture, flavors and colours.
Alternatively, there is an option of ordering the Yee Sang platter separately for RM98+ (advance booking is required).

The second dish is the Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Sea Cucumber and Dried Scallop 鸡鸣报晓. This invigorating soup with added Chinese boxthorns is prepared with delicate balance of captivating Chinese herbal flavor and nutrients.

Crispy Golden Roasted Duck 竹岁平安 is a rich dish filled with succulent duck. Served with condiment of sweet sauce, the meat lined with a little fat is moist and tender.

A light choice is the Braised Mushroom & Homemade Tofu with Scallop and Broccoli 延年益寿, served with silky soft deep-fried homemade tofu in a brown sauce. A combination of scallops, broccoli and braised mushrooms added flavors and textures and needless to say, the fa cai (a type of black moss) is welcoming as the word means ‘get rich’ in Cantonese.

Definitely interesting is the dish of Stir-fried Tiger Prawns with Butter Cream Sauce 红梅吐艳. The savory creamy buttery sauce drizzled lavishly over the huge crustacean is arguably appetizing.

Traditional claypot rice is on the menu and most places serve their diners with waxed meat, but here, they serve the Authentic Claypot Chicken Rice 阖家团圆. This classic claypot rice is a warm introduction with chunks of chicken marinated with soy sauce cooked over the rice. Old fashioned flavors shine through the dish with a sprinkle of chopped spring onions.

The meal ended with the sweet concoction of Snow Fungus and Ginkgo Nut in Soya Bean Milk 杏林春艳. This healthy dessert will get you excited with its creamy soya bean milk, chewy gingko nuts and snow fungus. Served cold, the dessert is delicious and you will be inclined to have one more serving.
