Das Rad Cafe – Bike-Themed Cafe in King Street, Penang
BY CK Lam
If you love cycling, coffee, cakes, and German food, Das Rad Cafe on King Street, George Town, Penang is the place to be!
Das Rad [das] [Ra:t] translated: The Bicycle is a bicycle-themed cafe. Opened just last April, the place is operated by Ben Viermann, a German born in Penang and his wife S.S. Tan.
The air-conditioned cafe with a friendly and causal dining atmosphere is decorated with biker memorabilia and a tv screen showing cycling events.
The food menu of course has German influences, and Tan prides herself on preparing the food as well as making the sweet desserts following Ben’s mum original German recipes.
For something filling, there is the all day breakfast, smoked salmon scramble eggs, pork schnitzel, and potato salad with bratwurst. You can enjoy the latter with mustard, and tomato sauce tweaked with curry powder.
The next dish is the Pork Schnitzel, which comes with your choice of pairing: spaghetti, potato salad or mashed potato. For those who like their potato with a bite, go for the potato salad which taste far better with bites of gherkin.
The slight spiciness and sweetness of the sauce made with tomato puree, capsicum, and diced tomatoes go well with every crispy bite of the meat.
There are also sandwiches and German pancake. At the moment, four sandwiches are available including bacon & egg, smoked salmon, egg, and cream cheese.
The German pancake Kaiserschmarrn features bite size shredded pancake made with egg, milk, flour, and raisins. Delicately dusted with powdered sugar, the soft puffy pieces of pancake are served with applesauce.
After the meal, all that is needed is dessert and a cup of coffee. At the dessert counter, you won’t find the usual sweet treats. Instead you will find freshly baked lemon peach cream cheese cake, apple meringue, wine cake and German hazelnut corners.
The apple meringue with layers of sponge cake, meringue, apple filling and toppings of almonds is moist with apple sweetness.
The drinks list comes with the standard choices of coffee, frappe, iced drinks and tea from Germany. The cup of long black includes a roll of roti tiau from Simpang Ampat’s famous Hup Hoe biscuit shop. The cafe also retails a variety of biscuits from Hup Hoe.
