Afternoon Tea at Teels Heritage Cafe, Penang
BY CK Lam
For foodie friends who desire an afternoon spent with good company sipping tea and savoring dainty pastries and cakes, do check out the Afternoon Tea at Teels Heritage Cafe tucked on Burma Road, Penang.
The Afternoon Tea menu has been launched recently, and was introduced to the media at the relaxed and comfy surroundings of Queen Victoria’s Parlour. The tea sets designed to blend tradition with innovation had us immersed among English tea staples and Ghee Hiang’s signature biscuits and pastries.
“The melange of East meets West treats will have guests discovering hand-crafted sweet delicacies alongside freshly baked tau sar pneah, beh teh saw, phong pneah, almond cookies and hneoh pneah,” said Ghee Hiang Director Ch’ng Huck Theng. The sweet staples include scones, cakes, macarons, brownies and mini-tarts.
There are various menu options to choose from. For the Hi Tea Premium Selections, Head Chef, Bryan Tang has created three choices: Concubine Premium Platter (RM78.80), Duchess Premium Platter (RM98.80) and the Queens Supreme Banquet Platter (RM138.80). Instead of presented in classic tiered stand, the delicacies are served in courses.
QUEENS SUPREME BANQUET PLATTER
The Queens Supreme Banquet Platter set with a tasty ensemble of sweet delicacies and two complimentary glasses of sparkling wine easily tickles every tastebud. Priced at RM138.80, the platter with a bias towards sweet items is great for groups of three or more.
We started with the sparkling wine and worked our way from the rustic cranberry scones, and artisan cakes to the divine macaroons. The server then set down the medieval lacquer box with an array of fresh fruit tart, cream custard choux, Peranakan dessert, chocolate cocoa brownie, and petite beef choux which can be devoured in a couple of small bites. We were further delighted with two platters of traditional local pastries (more info below) and a lemon souffle. The platter comes with hot beverages – choose any two from Ghee Hiang home brand beverage selections or freshly brewed coffee & tea by pot selections. I had the Pure White Coffee, a smooth, creamy cup of coffee.
Do be sure to make a reservation before hand as only three sets are available each day.
